The
most rewarding times, I can remember as a young coach, were traveling
to football clinics and listening to successful coaches, like John
McKay, Bear Bryant, Vince Lombardi and many others talk about their
special approach to offense, defense, special teams and team
organization. Although not everything fit into our style of coaching,
I would always gleam some bits of information that I could later
use.
Coaching clinics were our method of networking in the profession.
You found coaches with similar interests and made time to visit and
share information with each other. This was never done to promote
ourselves, but the contacts we made on the clinic circuit certainly
had a positive affect on our careers.
I remember listening to Don Coryell speak at a clinic one year. At
the next clinic we both attended, I found some time to sit and talk
football with him. He was one of the most intense, exciting coaches I
ever had a dialog with. His knowledge and more important, his love of
the game was evident from the very first time I shook his hand. One
year later, I got a call from Don. He had just been named Head Coach
at San Diego State University and wanted me to join his staff. I
remember asking him why he had taken the job, and he replied without
a moments hesitation, "They haven't won a game in the last three
years. Tom, there is no where for us to go but up."
Don,
of course was right and during the next three years I was part of the
fun of building a winning tradition at the school. Four years later,
when I was leaving to join the pros, the man I recommended to take my
place as Defensive Coordinator was John Madden. John and I had gone
to numerous clinics together and he left his Head Coaching position
at a Jr. College to come to San Diego. Going to clinics,
communicating with one another, sharing dreams and knowledge was the
common thread of the beginning years of my coaching career.
During my 23 year tenure as a NFL offensive coach and defensive
coordinator with the Bengals, Bucs and Chargers and since, in my own
business "Tom Bass Enterprises - The Business of Football", I have
always considered it an honor and privilege to share my knowledge and
expertise with fellow coaches in our game. When I retired from active
NFL coaching, my mentor, Coach Paul Brown and my good friend Coach
Jim Sweeney encouraged me to start my own onsite coaching clinics for
coaches across the USA. Each clinic is individually designed and
features information that is of specific interest to that particular
football staff. Over the years I have had the good fortune to present
these unique clinics to countless coaching staffs and I feel very
lucky to have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the
finest men in our profession.
At
this time, I am very excited to be able to bring this same clinic
information to you online. I wanted to be able to offer the same
invaluable football information that I have presented to college and
university staffs all across the US, in an affordable manner for
Youth, High School and Junior College coaches. I am starting with the
12 most requested clinic topics. Online, I am presenting a thorough
summary of each clinic topic. You will then have the opportunity to
order the very same in-depth clinic that I present to the college and
university staffs in coil bound, printed form, mailed directly to
your home or office.
Each topic is designed to be of tremendous assistance, great
interest, and equally beneficial for all coaches. The material
which I have prepared and you will receive for your reference library
and for your immediate personal use will include detailed diagrams in
addition to complete and thorough explanations of this cutting edge
coaching material.
The tremendous bonus I am offering is that unlike coaching
clinics you may attend or football articles you may read, once you
and your staff have examined the in-depth information and would like
to implement some ideas, I am personally available for consultations
through e-mail, to help you with any questions or situations
pertaining to the clinic topics you'd like to discuss to make it work
for you and your specific program.
I hope that these summaries as well as the in-depth clinics that
will be available for you can add to your team's success. Each topic
is designed to be of tremendous assistance, great interest, and
equally beneficial for every coach from the veteran head coach to the
young assistant just beginning his career at any level; youth, high
school junior college or university.
I also realize that there are many different ways to play
football. What I will be presenting to you represents the best that I
have found in over thirty years of coaching college and professional
football. Hopefully a large portion of the material will be of
benefit to you.
In season, your time is precious. Your focus is on the games at
hand. Good luck to you, your fellow coaches and players in the
upcoming year. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail
me at CoachBass@AOL.com. I
look forward to visiting with you soon.
