What it is
Focus on middle and away. React on an inside pitch. When a hitter gets in the box, he has to be looking for a pitch in a location he can drive. Once a hitter gets two strikes, he's looking to put the ball in play. If you look fastball, attack fastball — and when you are looking for a certain pitch and you get it, you cannot miss it.
Why it matters
If you're looking middle and away, you will not roll over or hit the pop up, because you are looking at attack location versus just swinging and hoping you hit it.
What to look for
Whether the hitter has a plan in the box — or is just seeing the ball and deciding late (see ball, hit ball: no kind of plan, letting the ball get over the plate, then deciding to swing).
What good looks like
Better swings on hittable pitches, fewer chases, and hard contact when the pitch the hitter is looking for arrives.
