Outfield Development: reads, routes and the throw, in order

Outfield Development is a 12-week program for baseball outfielders in left field, center field, right field or several. You choose the position and goals before the first session, and the 36 sessions are built around them.

It starts with the ready position, first step and reads off the bat, and finishes with the wall, communication and game-speed plays.

Sport: Baseball only.

Coach Bass Outfield Development cover

Who Outfield Development is for

  • Baseball outfielders in left, center or right field, or players who cover several outfield spots.
  • Players whose outfield work is mostly random fly balls.
  • Families who can train 2 or 3 days a week: 3 days takes 12 weeks, 2 days about 18.

Not random fly balls

Outfield work without a plan is usually random fly balls. This program puts it in order: the ready position, first step and reads first, then routes and ground balls, then the catch, crow hop and throw, then the wall, communication and game speed.

What the outfielder develops

  • Train the ready position, first step and reads off the bat
  • Take better routes to fly balls and ground balls
  • Catch, crow hop and throw in one motion
  • Play the wall and communicate with other fielders
  • Carry the work into game-speed plays
  • Follow a 12-week plan built around your position and goals
