Baseball swing analysis

Baseball Swing Analysis That Starts With the First Cause

Baseball swing analysis at CoachBass.com means reading one real game at-bat and deciding what the hitter should work on first. The technology reads the video. Coach Bass makes the coaching call: on the Free Hitter Scan, nothing is released until he has personally read the report.

This is not a one-time swing analysis. It is a continuing hitter-development system: the analysis tells us what to work on, and the plan is how we work on it.

The technology observes. Coach Bass interprets.

What the technology does

  • The analysis runs automatically after the upload.
  • It records the observations the video actually supports. Never manufactured, never padded.
  • It reads the ball only when the video actually carries ball or contact evidence.
  • It draws only the conclusions the submitted video supports, and says what it cannot determine.

What Coach Bass does

  • Provides the methodology, teaching system, calibration, content and oversight behind the analysis.
  • On the Free Hitter Scan, personally reads the report before anything is released.
  • Chooses one first correction, with the why behind it and what to tell the hitter, instead of a long list of problems.

Outside the Free Hitter Scan, routine evaluations are produced automatically by Coach Bass video-analysis technology using Coach Bass’s methodology. Something is labeled as personally reviewed by Coach Bass only when it actually was.

What Coach Bass looks for

The hands come first: Coach Bass believes the hands are the most important part of hitting. And the analysis does not hunt for everything that could be wrong. Development focuses on finding the first thing that needs attention, based on the available evidence, and Coach Bass develops the hitter rather than trying to replace the hitter’s swing with a universal model.

  1. 01 Observe
  2. 02 Find the first cause
  3. 03 Correct
  4. 04 Swing again
  5. 05 Observe the reaction
  6. 06 Adjust

The report identifies the development focus Coach Bass would address first. The Coach Bass hitting fundamentals:

How the Free Hitter Scan works

  1. Film one real at-bat. A full game at-bat, from the side, at real speed. Not a cage rep, not a highlight.
  2. Upload it. One video, from your phone or computer, into your free family account.
  3. The technology reads it, then Coach Bass reviews it. The analysis runs automatically. Nothing is released until Coach Bass has personally read it.
  4. Receive the report. It lands in your player's profile: what the video shows, the first thing to address, and what one at-bat cannot tell you.
  • • Free with a free family account - one scan per player every 30 days.
  • • A parent or guardian controls the player's video and report.
  • • The video stays private and is deleted after 90 days - or sooner, whenever you choose.

The Free Hitter Scan is for baseball hitters right now.

How to film the at-bat

Most hitting video is almost useful. These are the three things that make an at-bat readable, and the five that make it unreadable.

Send this

  • The whole swing — from the moment the pitcher starts his delivery through the finish.
  • Shot from the side, camera about even with the hitter.
  • Real game speed. One complete at-bat, live pitching.

Don’t send

  • Video that cuts in late and misses the start of the swing.
  • Shot from behind the backstop, or up in the stands.
  • Slow motion, or anything sped up.
  • A cage rep off a tee.
  • A highlight clip.

What the report shows

One report, reviewed by Coach Bass before it is released. These are its sections.

  • What I See — The supported observations from your video. Never manufactured, never padded.
  • What the Ball Tells Me — Included only when the video actually carries ball evidence.
  • First Thing I Would Address — One correction — the headline, the why behind it, and what to tell the hitter.
  • What Could Not Be Determined — The honest limits of one at-bat. The report says what it cannot see.
  • Your Plan and Your Drills — The development focus, what to work on, and the drills for it.
From the sample report

What I See

  1. The hands are not consistently getting to the same starting location when the load begins — the starting point moves from swing to swing.
  2. The shoulders are coiling to load. That coil can make still hands look like they move backward — the issue here is the starting location, not the coil.

First Thing I Would Address

Get the hands to the same starting location for the load

What one video can and cannot tell you

  • Coach Bass does not guess. Coach Bass would rather tell the hitter that something cannot be determined than manufacture an answer.
  • “Cannot determine” does not mean nothing is wrong. It means the available evidence does not support making that claim yet.
  • A home run or great result does not automatically mean every part of the swing was perfect, and a poor result does not automatically prove the swing was bad. Coach Bass evaluates the available evidence rather than grading a swing solely by the outcome.
  • If the available evidence cannot support a specific first correction, the hitter continues working through the Fundamentals of Hitting while additional evidence is collected.

From the analysis to a plan, not random swing changes

The evaluation flows straight into the development plan: the evaluation tells us what to work on; the plan is how we work on it. The hitter trains, competes, provides new evidence, and then the plan can adjust. The hitter’s development history continues over time rather than starting over with every video.

Swing analysis questions

Is every evaluation personally reviewed by Coach Bass?

No. Routine evaluations are produced automatically by Coach Bass video-analysis technology using Coach Bass's methodology.

Coach Bass provides the methodology, teaching system, calibration, content, and oversight. Something is labeled as personally reviewed by Coach Bass only when it actually was.

What does “cannot determine” mean?

It means the submitted evidence did not support making that specific determination.

Coach Bass would rather tell the hitter that something cannot be determined than manufacture an answer.

Why didn't my evaluation list everything wrong with my swing?

Because Coach Bass is not designed to overwhelm the hitter with every possible observation.

Development focuses on finding the first thing that needs attention based on the available evidence. The hitter trains, competes, provides new evidence — and then the plan can adjust.

Which swing should I upload?

Upload the swing or at-bat you want to understand.

A home run or great result does not automatically mean every part of the swing was perfect, and a poor result does not automatically prove the swing was bad.

Coach Bass evaluates the available evidence rather than grading a swing solely by the outcome.

Does a good result mean my swing was perfect?

No. Results are evidence, but the outcome of one swing does not by itself prove every part of the swing was correct.

Does the ball need to be visible?

No — you don't need to follow the ball with the camera.

When the video does show useful ball, contact, or result evidence, that adds information — in Coach Bass's words, the ball will tell you exactly what you are doing. But the system only draws conclusions the submitted video actually supports.

Should I upload batting-practice video or game video?

Game evidence is especially valuable, because Coach Bass develops hitters to perform in competition — not simply to look good during batting practice.

Training, tee, and BP video can still be useful when it helps evaluate a specific development focus, and members can store swing videos on the Swing Video page.

How long does an evaluation take?

The analysis itself runs automatically after the upload. Nothing is released until Coach Bass has personally read the report, so timing depends on when he gets to it — the Free Hitter Scan page shows “Coach Bass is reviewing” until then.

You don't need to keep anything open. We email you when the report is ready, and it stays in your player's profile.
