Pitch Recognition
1:37
What this video covers
Pitch recognition starts before the pitch. Coach Bass answers a parent whose son has trouble telling a curveball from a fastball, and his answer is simple: pick one.
You either look fastball or you look offspeed. Everything that is not a fastball, the curveball, the changeup, the knuckleball, goes in the same pile. If you are looking fastball, you cannot adjust to offspeed. If you are looking offspeed, you cannot adjust to a fastball.
Coach Bass calls it hunting. Think of a buffet: if you are looking for a piece of chicken, you are not going to grab a rib. You are looking for a pitch in a zone. If you are looking fastball and the pitcher throws offspeed, take it, and the other way around.
And when you get the pitch you are hunting, you cannot miss it.
Key points: - Go to the plate with a plan: fastball or offspeed, not both. - Hunt a pitch in a zone you can drive. - Take the pitch you are not looking for. - When you get your pitch, attack it.

Hey, guys, Coach Bass here. Hey, I just wanted to do a little video to explain. I've had a few messages on the website yesterday. And one of them in particular was the gentleman's son has problems recognizing a curveball or fastball. And the main thing is, in hitting, you either got to pick one. You either look at fastball, or you're looking off speed. So curveball, change up, knuckles, whatever people throw, that all goes into the same pile. So you can't sit in there and the higher level, in the youth, it might be kids throwing 65, 70, or whatever. It's equivalent of 90, 95 mile an hour fastball. So bottom line is, if you're looking fastball, you can't adjust to off speed. If you're looking off speed, you can't adjust to a fastball. So you either got to look one or the other. I like to use analogies. If you had a buffet and you're looking for a piece of chicken, you're not going to grab a rib or vice versa. So, and like I said, you're able to attack. You're looking zone, you're looking pitches, zones, and that's what you do. You know what I mean? I call it hunting. You know what I mean? You're hunting that pitch. If you're looking fastball and it throws off speed, take, vice versa, all right? But the one thing is when you get that pitch, you cannot miss it. I'm telling you, you've got to get it, all right? So like I said, CoachBass.com. This is one of your tips.
